Creativity enriches everyone’s life. Through corporate support of the
cultural arts, GM is committed to helping the filmmakers,
artists and musicians of today – and tomorrow. As part of the
company’s community outreach, GM:
Provides grants to women’s art and cultural organizations, such as
the 2005 Women’s Film
Preservation Fund to Women In Film.
Sponsors art and music competitions, like the 2005 student
environmental photography competition won by Megan
Argillander, a sophomore at Detroit Renaissance High School.
Recognizes excellence by partnering with worthy events, such
as the 19th Annual Soul Train Music Awards, where
GM was the official presenter of the coveted Quincy Jones
Award for Outstanding Career Achievements.
Concerned about issues that affect women, GM:
Establishes employee action groups, like the GM Affinity
Group for Women. With more than 2,000 members, it focuses on
increasing market share, attracting and retaining
outstanding female employees and providing programs and
tools to assist women in career development.
Promotes diversity by hiring and encouraging exceptional employees,
such as Sonia Green, GM’s director of Hispanic diversity
marketing and sales, who was named one of Hispanic
Business magazine’s “2005 Elite Women.”
-
Furthers safety and other issues important to women by offering
services like OnStar, the in-vehicle safety and security system.
- Funds and maintains female-centric communications, such as
Women in the Driver’s Seat,
GM’s online guide to car purchasing, maintenance and safety.
- Offers Flexible Service, a flex scheduling and job sharing program
that has been part of the fabric of GM’s workplace for more than 20 years.
- Provides resources and support to hundreds of local organizations
dedicated to women and their families.
General Motors: Living Green:
- Far more than other car manufacturers who popularized “hybrid” vehicles, GM is working to improve how people live and work company-wide.
GM is working to improve how people live and work through the
company’s products and policies:
- GM has more fuel-efficient cars and trucks across more vehicle
segments in the U.S. than any other automaker, foreign or domestic. In the U.S. market, 19 of GM’s
models, including the exciting Pontiac G6, deliver at least 30 miles per gallon.
- Within North America, GM facilities have reduced their overall
carbon dioxide emissions by more than 11% during the past three years, making GM the first partner
in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Climate Leaders” program to reach their aggressive,
voluntary goal two years earlier than planned.
- GM is working hard to develop alternate energy sources for
vehicles, creating hybrid vehicles and fuel cell technology to reduce fuel consumption. Shuttle
buses powered by GM’s advanced hybrid technology are already operating.
General Motors is the world’s largest automaker, employing 321,000 people worldwide.
- Founded in 1908, GM has been the automotive industry’s global sales
leader since 1931.
- Headquartered at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit,
Michigan, GM has manufacturing operations in 32 countries. GM vehicles are sold in more than 200 countries.
- In 2004, GM sold nearly 9 million cars and trucks, up 4% from the
year prior and the second-highest sales record in the company’s history.
