Helping others helps yourself.  Those who give, get back.

Knowing this, in 1993, WIF/LA founded and developed the Public Service Announcement (PSA) Program, allowing new filmmakers to get their start and give back to the community by producing PSAs that promote services crucial to women and children. It’s a win-win-win situation — deserving organizations gain financial and creative support they would otherwise lack, WIF members are given a chance to showcase their work and women in need receive critical aid.

Since 1993, WIF chapters have partnered with local non-profit organizations to produce and market more than 50 PSA campaigns, generating widespread awareness for causes ranging from literacy to child abuse. Over 3000 WIF members have gained valuable production experience- and credit- by “doing” PSAs. Local chapter contributions include:

  • Atlanta. Last year, members of Women in Film/Atlanta joined forces with the Atlanta production community and The Center to End Adolescent Sexual Exploitation (CEASE) to produce "Someone's Daughter," a PSA about child prostitution. United Way was so impressed with the piece, they added their logo as a show of support.
  • Dallas. More than 40 members of WIF/Dallas donated their time and creativity to the 2004 Meals on Wheels PSA. WIF/D’s 2002 PSA supported Gilda’s Club, an advocate for the emotional and social support for anyone touched by cancer.
  • Los Angeles. The Los Angeles chapter produces four to five campaigns a year. It has produced PSAs for the California Literacy Program, School on Wheels, the League of Women Voters and many, many others. The program has received numerous awards, including an invitation to the White House for its work on behalf of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
  • Seattle. WIF/Seattle produces one PSA a year for a worthy organization. The chapter’s most recent PSA provides much-needed exposure for the Refugee Women’s Alliance, a first-step organization for immigrant refugees starting new lives in America.
